Are we important or unimportant in this universe? We are very important. We are so very important that it is futile to even consider the possibility of our unimportance. Close your eyes and see if you can conceive yourself disappearing from this universe. It is impossible to not exist. That is how important we are.
Then why are we told that we are a tiny speck in this cosmos, and don't make a big deal or a big fuss about yourself. That is for people who make their ego's more important. In that case, this statement is a pinprick to an inflated baloon. Just think about it - billions of galaxies, billions of stars within each galaxy, probably billions of planets around each star. One such planet called earth sustains life - and a speck of life considering itself as important is a futile exercise.
On the other hand, we are part of this staggering energy field called the Universe. The Universe is really made up of all these micro fragments of energy. The Universe would cease to exist if even one micro fragment disappears - because it cannot disappear. Every single entity is important for the Universe to sustain itself - that is the level of respect bestowed upon every "living" and "non-living" "thing".
This question of importance or non-importance has different answers depending on your viewpoint and what you're using it for.
If you're the person who considers yourself important over others - "us" versus "them", "me" versus "him"/"her", "our nation" versus "their nation" - just wait for the pinprick!! These terms are useful to support our illusion of relative existence and nothing more. The illusion itself is very useful for experiencing what we choose to, but if used for anything that is rift-creating or divisive - we'll learn that "we'll receive what we send out", and probably the hard way.
If you're looking at yourself as a part of this Universe (or one of it's synonyms - God, Life, Super Ego, Cosmos, Super Consciousness, Tao, Zen, Infinity, BuddhaField, AlphaOmega - so many more) - they you're very very very important. But then, you'll probably not call yourself important in a comparative sense either. Your contribution is what the Universe is waiting for. And you're the kind of person who can change the world for the better, and can be responsible for our collective consciousness to jump up to the next level. A single person like you can lift the entire humanity to a different plane. You're the kind of person who does anything with a consciousness that makes a statement that you're one with Life - and this very act changes the climate around you. You are the person who causes a ripple on the Universal lake - the ripple of evolution that starts with you but never stops anywhere.
